One pillar of IDA’s 2017 legislative package has begun to move thorough the Indiana General Assembly this week. House Bill 1135 establishes the Dental Recruitment Fund and is designed to provide student loan forgiveness for dentists and hygienists who locate in underserved areas and agree to accept dental Medicaid. The bill received a hearing on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, by the House Public Health Committee. The IDA, along with representatives of the IDHA and IUSD, testified in favor of the bill that passed the committee unanimously 12 to 0.

Part of the funding comes from a $15,000 appropriation supplemented with license renewal surcharges of $20 and $10 on dentists and hygienists respectively. The bill also calls for an appropriation of $175,000 from the state general fund

The measure is authored by Rep David Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) and co-authored by Rep Charlie Brown (D-Gary). HB 1135 may be recommitted to the House Ways and Means committed due to the funding. If it is not recommitted if will move to the House floor for second reading.
