Indiana lawmakers returned to the Statehouse on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, to kick off annual Organization Day. The Indiana Dental Association was represented at the ceremonial event by Director of Governmental Affairs Ed Popcheff.
What Is Organization Day?
Organization Day is a ceremonial day for Indiana legislators, usually held in November to kick off the next session will begin in January. Organization Day is basically an administrative day with no legislative votes or debates taking place.
What Happens on Organization Day?
When it’s a budget year, or long session, new committee members are sworn in on Organization Day. During a short session, each caucus uses the day to prepare for the upcoming General Assembly.
Who Attends Organization Day?
All members of both the Indiana House and Senate are requested to attend Organization Day. They may optionally invite friends and family members to learn about the Statehouse and meet and greet Indiana legislators.
What Happens When Session Begins?
Since 2018 is a non-budget year, the upcoming session is a short session and will run January through mid-March. A few of the issues expected to be addressed include:
- Combating Indiana’s opioid crisis
- Increasing Indiana’s smoking age
- Appropriating additional school funding
A few of the issues that IDA will be keeping an eye on during the 2018 session include:
- Dental hygienist access practice agreements
- Medical malpractice changes
- Third party payer issues
